Men (and women) of Israel, listen to these words

With Shavuot coming up, I found myself thinking of something that happened in Jerusalem one Shavuot, a long time ago.

It was not long after Jesus, who had been crucified by the Romans and then rose from the dead, was taken up to heaven. Before leaving his disciples he told them to wait in Jerusalem, promising them: “you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

Not many days – the crucifixion and resurrection happened at Passover, and Shavuot is seven weeks later; his ascension to heaven was 40 days after the resurrection, so Shavuot was pretty close. So for a week and a bit the disciples waited in Jerusalem, and then…
